The Artist

Arina Essipowitsch is presented by Marta Ponsa, in charge of artistic projects and cultural action at the Jeu de Paume.

Born in Minsk in 1984, Arina Essipowitsch studied art in Aix-en-Provence and Dresden, Germany. She works between Berlin and Aix-en-Provence, her current place of residence.

In her artistic practice, Arina Essipowitsch explores notions of identity and displacement determined by her biography. The artist reappropriates photography through a particular visual language: she enlarges, folds and transforms the image, breaking it down into several modules that are stretched out in space to build veritable three-dimensional objects. These fragments of a single piece combine to form an infinite number of new images, extending the viewer’s visual experience. These portable images stem from the artist’s sensitive relationship with the territories she travels through, and become traces of her own history, like a family album. During her performances, Arina literally plunges us into the moving photographic material, having fun blurring all reference points of scale and space to encourage us to break the boundaries of the image and look differently.

Fold is an installation made up of two double-sided photographic prints, reworked by a series of incisions and folds.

The exhibition Arina Essipowitsch. Méandres is on show at the Jeu de Paume - Tours until October 29, 2023.
