Installations, Still and Moving images
October 16-20, 2024

For its third edition, OFFSCREEN welcomes Artforum, Printed Matter and Giving Back Is Dead.

OFFSCREEN is pleased to partner with Artforum, the renowned international art magazine that has shaped critical discourse in contemporary art for over six decades.

At OFFSCREEN, Artforum will launch “Artforum Dossiers”: thematic collections of previously published materials aimed at making the magazine’s vast archive more accessible to the public. The first Dossier is centered on Celluloid to coincide with OFFSCREEN and takes a circuitous tour through the archive highlighting artists working with the medium and key issues the medium presents. Among the selections are Rosalind Krauss on Tacita Dean in 2012, Regina Cornwell on Paul Sharits and the dualism of the film as projected and experienced image in 1971, and Erika Balsom writing in 2017 on the shifting authenticity of film in the contemporary age with Rosa Barba, OFFSCREEN’s 2023 Guest of Honor.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the first Dossier in a pop-up exhibition of OFFSCREEN related archives at the Grand Garage Haussmann.

Printed Matter presents an Artists’ Book Store at OFFSCREEN. Giving Back Is Dead returns for the third edition at OFFSCREEN in its program of live interviews at the Grand Garage Haussmann on NextGen giving to the arts. Focus this year is on European-led initiatives with Sophie Neuendorf and Brigitte Nicole Grice.

Giving Back Is Dead is a platform that allows Scott Stover to engage with leaders from the arts and philanthropy world to discuss the evolving landscape, beyond the concept of “charity.” The podcast was born from the idea of a generational shift in behavior and is structured around a central question: “How does giving to the arts make the world a better place?” The podcast aims to show how the arts can continue to be a source of inspiration for each of us. Its mission is to bring together sector leaders to create a vision and new strategies for the functioning of foundations.

Scott Stover is a cultural and philanthropic strategy advisor specializing in the arts, culture, and sciences, with a focus on innovative approaches to building sustainable systems. Drawing on his experience as an investment banker, Scott prioritizes the development of financially sound models that link the arts and philanthropy, designed to create long-term impact.

Friday 18 October — 9AM | Dr. Brigitte Nicole Grice

Dr. Brigitte Nicole Grice is the president and co-founder of Chez Max et Dorothea, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacies of artists Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning. The organization is actively working to acquire their final home and studios in Seillans, France, to operate as an artist residency, research center, and exhibition space, alongside their current 8,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Los Angeles. Brigitte’s journey toward founding Chez Max et Dorothea began in 2017 during her doctorate studies at the University of Essex, where she explored international Surrealism, studying in both film and art history. Her research fueled a passion for creating a space that keeps the spirit of Surrealism alive while inspiring contemporary artists. When Brigitte learned that the Seillans house designed by Ernst and Tanning was available, her academic vision became a reality. Chez Max et Dorothea emerged as a vibrant space for creation and collaboration, bridging Surrealist legacies with contemporary artistic innovation. Through this project, Brigitte invites patrons and artists to help preserve a pivotal piece of art history while pushing it forward into the future. Brigitte Nicole Grice is a gemini and also lives as an artist, writer, filmmaker and curator.
