José Luis Landet
by W—Galería

The Artist

In a site specific installation “Soportar la representación” (Supporting the Representation) at OFFSCREEN, José Luis Landet recovers and reutilizes wooden frames that once supported paradisiacal representations by different amateur painters between 1940 and 1970 to create a grid on which he projects images of landscapes, as if returning the subject to its original frame. Investigating socio-cultural remnants, the artist performs metaphorical-poetic actions that create new narratives from pre-existing materials. For this work, Landet uses recovered oil paintings depicting landscapes with romantic and bucolic characteristics, commonly created by amateur artists known as “Sunday painters.” Landet’s work highlights the materiality of these elements and their memory, time, and usage.

Landet has exhibited at Pacific Standard Time, Los Angeles, Louisiana Museum, Denmark, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Fundación PROA in Buenos Aires, Museo Ex Teresa de Arte Actual in Mexico, FLORA ars+natura in Bogotá, Museo de Arte Moderno in México, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MACO) in Oaxaca and others. Landet’s work is held in collections such as the Jumex Collection, Louisiana Museum, LACMA, MACO and others. He lives and works in Buenos Aires.

The Gallery

Founded in 2016 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, W has established itself as a platform for critical reflection on artistic processes, production conditions, cultural practices, and connections between artworks, artists, audiences, and institutions. The gallery has three locations. In Buenos Aires, W—Archivo focuses on archive material, editorial work, and research as a process, and W—Galería exhibits contemporary proposals with an ambitious institutional program. In Pueblo Garzón, W—Naturae promotes ecological and artistic initiatives in connection with the environment. Alongside year-round exhibitions and participation in international art fairs, W publishes artist books with its editorial label and since 2019 produces the publication Yulinda.
