Andrés Denegri
by Rolf Art

The Artist

At OFFSCREEN, Andrés Denegri presents “Clamor” (Uproar) (2012-2024), a site-specific film installation bringing together different works from the series “We Were Expected” (2012- ongoing) in an unprecedented way. The work revolves around the origins of cinema associated with the modernist economical project of the Industrial Revolution, of which cinema was both proof and apology. Lumière brothers projections and early Argentinian films interact within a scaffolding machinery, expanding the film, while screens are testimony of a work in progress, evoking Argentina’s failed industrialization process. The works bring together film strips, projectors — ranging from powerful 35mm cinema machines to the fragility of a Super 8 projector, spotlights, shadows, and film bearings. Combined with the environmental sound of the functioning pieces the artwork is an operating machine.

Denegri is a prominent figure in contemporary audiovisual arts, specializing in expanded and installed cinema. His multidisciplinary work encompasses film, video, installations, and photography, addressing them both poetically and conceptually, creating tension in the classic uses of audiovisual technologies. Denegri’s photographic work is rooted in analog cinema, utilizing sequences of 16mm or Super 8 film frames to create still images. His work has been widely awarded worldwide, exhibited in museums, galleries and international events and is part of public and private collections in Latin America & Europe. He is director of the Electronic Arts Degree at UNTREF and also co-director of the Imagen en Movimiento Biennale (BIM).

The Gallery

Rolf Art, located in Buenos Aires and founded by Florencia Giordana Braun in 2009, is the only art gallery specialized in technical image in Argentina. Focused on contemporary Latin American visual arts, the gallery features works exploring photographic media and its boundaries. The selection of artworks considers pieces with an inextricable union between critical density and aesthetic value. The curatorial profile challenges the political context & considers the social and economical background of artistic production as a determining factor for art’s interpretation. The gallery is committed to a select group of contemporary established Latin American artists, promoting them on a national and international basis.
